August 17, 2010

I was thinking today that this has probably been one of my least favorite summers. This is so different to my normal thinking. I hate winter. I long for summer. In January, as soon as the holidays are gone, I start counting the days until spring. I check weather.com to see what time the sun sets to know that the days, indeed, are getting longer. More sunshine, or light, every day. But this summer has been odd. I broke my arm on June 1st. That was my first indication that this wasn't going to be a fun summer. Then I thought that it might be only for 4 weeks. Well after 4 weeks it was clear that was wishful thinking. Not only did I break my arm, it was broken mid-shaft, and with that kind of break it takes 6 - 8 weeks to start to heal. GREAT! I had two weddings in July. How could I go to a wedding with a cast on? I was so embarrassed. Then you get to wear a splint for another 2 weeks. I mean, come on, the whole summer with a broken arm.

Also, I think this has been the hottest summer of all. 90 degree days for most of July. A cast on over my elbow and 90 degrees outside! Can you think sweating? That was me.

So here we are now, August 17th, and basically summer is over. Maybe not as temperatures go, but school starts next week so the relaxing, laid back summertime is over. My baby boy starts kindergarten next week. I am sure it's going to be a tough day for his mom and dad and me, too.
